(>View: HACKING TELENET/THE 950 PREFIX Hacking Telenet Written by: Frank Roberts OSUNY-BBS (914) 428-7216 Compliments of the Realm of the UNHOLY (314) 256-3976 This is the first in a series to cover the general procedures of the major data networks: TELENET, TYMNET, AUTONET, and ARPANET. BACKGROUND ---------- Telenet connects many large computers to itself through dedicated telephone lines. Each of these 'host computers' is assigned a node address (ie.: NPAXX.) Telenet is an international data network, connecting to computers around the world. ---------- Telenet is probably the most 'user friendly' of the four major networks. A normal login looks like this: After making connection with local Telenet dialup, you type: [2 RETURNS] Telenet responds with: TELENET NPAXX [Where NPA=AREA CODE and XX=NODE ADDRESS] TERMINAL=[Here you type your terminal identifier] @ ['@' is Telenet's prompt] THINGS TO DO ON TELENET ----------------------- To connect to a node type: C NPAXX [Where NPA=AREA CODE and XX=NODE ADDRESS] A few of the things that Telenet will say are: NPAXX CONNECTED (you are connected to a computer) ILLEGAL ADDRESS (not a working node) NPAXX NOT REACHABLE (the computer at that node is 'down') NPAXX REFUSED COLLECT CONNECTION (needs a paid ID) NPAXX REJECTING (computer is 'up' but not available) NPAXX NOT RESPONDING (the computer at that node is 'down') MORE THINGS TO DO ----------------- Typing an '@' while in a host computer will return you to Telenet's '@' prompt. You may now use the following commands: D (to disconnect from the host computer) TAPE (it is unclear what this command does) C (this command is explained in greater detail above; however, be sure to type D first or Telenet will respond with STILL CONNECTED.) If you type either D or TAPE while not connected to a node, Telenet will respond with NOT CONNECTED. MISCELLANEOUS ------------- RESET (resets Telenet; you must start with the again) SET (unknown) MAIL (to connect to GTE Telemail. It will ask for USER? and PASSWORD?; often it will also ask for ORGANIZATION?) NOTES ----- In addition to the normal area codes in NPAXX there are also other NPA's used in telenet: 909 and 311, for instance. Telenet hangs up after three disconnections from host computers. There is no way to get around this as far as I can tell. The ID command in Telenet is to identify users to the host computers. You must type ID (your ID#) (your password). If you just type ID, Telenet will tell you that your ID is cleared, which means nothing. To recieve a paid user ID for Telenet call them at... Telenet Customer Service: 800-336-0437 In Virginia: 800-572-0408 HACKING ------- Telenet is very convinient for hackers as it connects many computers to your terminal, without having to find and dial many numbers. Start your telehacking by picking an area code and then trying all the nodes in that NPA. You will no doubt find MANY interesting computers to work on. For example, 314100 is the WU Medical Computer. But most of all..... HAVE PHUN! [Ed. note: The local Telenet dialup is (314) 421-4990.] --------------------------------------- The 950 Prefix Compliments of the Realm of the UNHOLY (314) 256-3976 The 950 prefix is a very strange one indeed. It was created by Ma Bell, God rest her soul, for all the SCC'S (Specialized Common Carrier) to place their services upon. This would be of benifit to them because they could have the same dialup in all cities (for instance, SPC could be 950-1000 everywhere in the U.S.) For reasons I am unsure of, the carriers rejected their proposal (but some SCC'S are there anyway!) One of the disadvantages of the 950 prefix is that 950 is a special ESS that can TRACE YOUR CALLS SO FAST IT WOULD MAKE YOUR HEAD SPIN, so use them ONLY FROM PAY STATIONS (fortress phones, pay booths, etc.) Some of the nice things about them is that they (usually) give crystal clear connections. Skyline and Lexitel are two that have these good connections. Another thing is that 950 is a free call from a paystation! Bell was supposed to drag down the 950 prefix, but I guess they never got around to doing it. Here is the list of all the 950 numbers I know of at this time. BUT REMEMBER, THEY TRACE AT THE FIRST SIGN OF TROUBLE! 950-1000.....SPC (Southern Pacific Communications) 950-1022.....MCI Execunet 950-1033.....U.S. Telephone 950-1044.....Allnet 950-1066.....Lexitel 950-1088.....SBS Skyline This is all that is known right now. Info will be added when obtained.
